Link Exchange ("Reciprocal Link Exchange") is the practice of exchanging links with other websites. The simplest way of doing it is to email another website owner and ask to do a link exchange. You place their link on your site, usually on a links page and the other site in return will place a link back to you.

Link exchange has been a long time practice by website owners since the beginning of the WWW. In the last few years (after year 2000), this practice has gained more popularity as search engines such as Google started favoring sites that had more links in the rankings.

Considering this, a lot of link exchange resources came out and webmasters massively started to search for partners to share their links. In terms of preserving netiquettes and online legitimacy of content and references, most leading search engines have started penalizing web sites with intentional two way link exchanges. As a result, several quality one way links management services are available on the internet that provide targeted, user-friendly, one-way links management service to web site owners. Very soon, the dynamics of link exchange should certainly shift from 'intentional bulk two way link exchanges leading to linkfarms' to legitimate high quality and user friendly one way links among web sites.

Thanks for this info. I was actually looking to know the exact meaning of the link exchange as I have just stepped into this field. Now that I have got the meaning of the same I will be able to negotiate things in a smoother way, never thought that this explanation I would get to see from an adult forum!

it can if you're doing link exchange with site that is banned by Google... other then that it will not 100%
