Should you use www. in your web site ulr or not? Today i've been asked this question on icq by one of ABF members... Search engines see these two urls as different sites

1. http://www.example.com
2. http://example.com

You can use either of them, and the most important both options are good... But you HAVE to decide which one you'll use at the very start of your site building (if you chosen to use it with www. then always use it)

When you're doing link trades with other webmasters make sure they gave you link to www.example.com, not to http://example.com because you don't want to spread your backlinks and PR

To redirect visitors to www. from http://.com you should add these two lines into your .htaccess file


This will always send surfer to www.example.com and will always show www.example.com in SERPs Hope this helps...

i want to add my 2c - www is default subdomain of your domain and most webmasters use it as default domain name. Domain name would be something.com and www.something.com would be it's subdomain
btw i always use www.something.com

But this also could be managed by the apache in general. And do not forget to enter a *.yourdomain so you will catch all type in for your domain.

I saw you can tell Google whether you want "www" or without on the Google Webmaster central portal. Does anyone know if that helps or hurts?

i am used always to use the www. infront when typing links or whatsoever and i am doing it just because most surfers do it. Pretty often when i am saying a site url to someone, i am being asked with "www" infront or no? So i just don't confuse surfers
