You're entirely correct. The 3000+ post count definitely helped, and I actually got the backing of the forum's admins to allow me to leave the signature on the account.
I DID start another account from scratch, never posted replies and such, but said forum has a section for posting links to free videos/pictures, so it worked well with posting just threads of new content every day. I did this for a few weeks, and still to this day I get hundreds of uniques from them daily. I guess it all really boils down to two things; 1) the luck of the draw, and 2) the quality of your contributions to the forums.
If you just post-whore like you said, they'll almost definitely ban you and/or delete all your posts/signatures. If you're making good contributions to a relevant forum, you'll come out on top. I posted in the right forum in the right section and it paid off big. All I can really say is good luck to those of you who will attempt this, as you will indeed get shot down several times before you come out on top. Trust me. I tried the same tactic on like 15 different adult surfer forums, and got banned from at least 10 of them. One even has my link blacklisted, lol, so it can't even be so much as mentioned by credible members of that forum. Good thing I have other domains pointing to it
